Käsi kädessä

Syksy tuo mukanaan uuden alun. Luonto valmistautuu lepoon samaan aikaan, kun kesälaitumilta palaavat ihmisjoukot miettivät, mitä kaikkea tekisivät ennen talvea. Päivien hämärtyessä itse kukin voi pohtia jo saavutettuja ja vielä saavuttamattomia päämääriä. Samalla henkilökohtaisesta välitilinpäätöksestä voi arvioida, miten yhteiselo toisten ihmisten kanssa on sujunut ja kuinka sopuisasti on toiminut Jumalan luomakunnassa.

Lasten virsi muistuttaa oleellisesta tasapainosta: "Kun on toisessa kädessä Jumala ja toisessa olet sinä, niin me voimme yhdessä oppia elämään ihmisinä." Yksin pärjääminen on kuluttavaa. Toisen ihmisen rinnalla kulkeminen avartaa näköaloja ja kertoo kyvystämme kantaa myötätuntoisina vastuuta. Jumalan armossa kasvaminen vahvistaa meitä tällä tiellä.

Jumalan johdatukseen luottaen ja lähimmäisten tuen avulla pärjäämme hyvin, vaikka ilmapiiri ympärillämme viilenisi.

"Herra, elämääni valvo, etten harhaan vaeltaisi täällä ohi ihmisten. Sydäntäni ohjaa, anna minun, Herra, armossasi kasvaa, olla ihminen", lauletaan virressä 509.

Hand in hand

Autumn brings with it a new beginning. Nature prepares for rest as crowds of people come back from summer pastures, pondering what they should do before winter. As the days grow dimmer, each person can reflect on the goals achieved and those yet unachieved.

At the same time, from a personal interim assessment, one can evaluate how coexistence with other people has gone and how harmoniously one has acted in God's creation.

A children's hymn reminds us of the essential balance: 'When God is in one hand and you are in the other, then we can together learn to live as humans’. Coping alone is exhausting. Walking alongside another person broadens perspectives and indicates our ability to bear compassionate responsibility. Growing in God's grace strengthens us on this journey.

By trusting in God's guidance and with the support of our neighbors, we can manage well, even if the atmosphere around us would cool down.

We sing in hymn 509, "Lord, watch over my life, that I may not wander astray here, past the people. Guide my heart, let me, Lord, grow in Your grace, to be a human".
